[Bookplate for McLean] In black ink, though somewhat faded, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, with a gules (red) bordure ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with two eagles heads addorsed, gules and erased above a mountain ; the second quadrant, argent, is charged with a dexter arm, gules, holding a cross crosslet fitchy, azure (blue) ; and the third quadrant, argent, is charged with a galley, sable (black), over a fish, azure and naiant (swimming fesswise). The escutcheon is crested by a dexter helmet, open and containing a lion head, topped by a curved wreath and two laurel branches, crossed. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 22. [Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 23. [Bookplate for John Lomar] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are parted per pale ; on the left, or (gold), and the right, sable (black). The quarters have a bend cotised, ermine, charged with three escallops apiece. Quarter two is argent (silver), charged with a gryphon rampant. Quarter three is argent, with a cross, sable, with engrailed borders. The quarter is charged with four roundlets, two over two (cantoned). Above the escutcheon is a curved wreath, charged with a crown vallary, and a demi-lion, its arms erect, clutching an escallop. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 24. [Bookplate for John Leeds Bozman] This bookplate consists of an argent (silver) escutcheon with a gules (red) fess. On the escutcheon are three sable (black) eagles, displayed, two over one. Raised above the shield on floral mantling is a curved crest wreath, and a perched cockatrice. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 25. [Bookplate for John Campbell] This bookplate consists of an elaborately bordered escutcheon containing the arms of the ancient Scottish family of Campbell, heavily mantled with flora. The Campbell arms are Gyronny of eight, or (gold) and sable (black). The crest, atop a curved wreath, appears as a cubit arm holding a horseman's spur and strap. Below the shield is a banner containing the English motto. 26. [Bookplate for Jessie Hunter] A single black fillet surrounds the central image on the bookplate. Two banners sit above and below the central image of a large open book overlays a lighted oil lamp with two wicks on curved arms curling outwards from the central hub of the lamp. The lamp is sitting on the outline of a table. The images may imply that books bring awareness of the unknown. 27. [Bookplate for James Tatlock] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon azure (blue), a bend, engrailed, or (gold). Above the bend is a fish, urinant. Above the shield is a curved wreath topped with a fish, urianant. 28. [Bookplate for James F. Millar] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a slightly curved wreath and a demi-archer, nude. Above the crest is a banner containing the English motto. 29. [Bookplate for James Bryce Allan] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per bend, dancetty. Bordure, azure [blue]. Above field, argent [white] and ermine, a stag, gules [red], erased, antlers, or [gold], and an annulet, or. Below field, gules, a crescent. Helm has mantling around a tilting helmet on top of which is a curved crest wreath with a dog, erased. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 30. [Bookplate for James Blackman] This simple bookplate consists of text encircled by two curved branches. 31. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso. 32. [Bookplate for Gerald E. Hart by Edwin Cox & Co.] Multicoloured ink on cream paper. Leaves with three pointed leaves adorn the corner of a brick pattern background. The leaves and brick are a pale green. There is an elaborate image printed on top of the pale green pattern. The bricks form an arch shape in the top centre to surround an elaborate multicoloured, painted arch. The arch is brown, gold, and black with ‘X’ decorations and borders. The arch surrounds a multicolour stained glass window, at the forefront of which sits a monk writing in a book. The stained glass window features a central circular decoration with three red circular borders surrounding three yellow circles, in the center of which are yellow flowers with three petals and green accents. In the outer spaces between the circles are rounded triangular lined insertions. At the very center of the three circles is a three ringed circle. To the bottom left and right of the circle decoration are more teardrop shaped sections with tapered bottoms. They each features yellow flowers with stems. Below the right floral decoration are two more similarly shaped sections with a swirling ribbon in each atop a blue crosshatch background. The arch connects to a Romanesque pillar on either side. The arch connects to an elaborately decorated bench, which has a golden floral motif. A bearded monk sits on the bench in floor-length yellow robes. The monk faces the right, where there is a desk. The desk is decorated on the side with ‘X’ decorations. Atop the desk is an open book that the monk is writing on. Below the desk is a decorative bird with a long, curved neck and floral elements extending from its back. The bird is accented with gold. To the right of the bird, partly reaching up to the top of the desk, are two rolled up pieces of paper. The floor consists of two thin platforms with green accents. A smaller rectangle is below with a gold crosshatch pattern. Text in the style of medieval manuscripts is printed atop. The first letter of each word is more stylized and in red font ; the rest of the text is blue. A thin ledge extends from the bottom of that rectangle. It tapers down to a more narrow line with two small pointed feet at the left and right sides. In that small section is a repeating geometric pattern in gold on a brown background. Below the entire image is small, red, capitalized, sans-serif font. 33. [Bookplate for George Meek] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a garter bordure, azure (blue) and buckled. The space within the circular frame is divided quarterly, with a label, argent (silver), at the fess point. The first quadrant, gules (red), is charged with three stirrups, two over one ; the second quadrant, or (gold), is charged with a lion, passant guardant and gules, above two bars, gemels and gules ; the third quadrant, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), contains two bars, gemels and gules ; and the fourth quadrant, argent, contains a bend coticed, sable, charged with three fish, hauriant (upward facing). The garter is crested by a curved wreath, topped by a lion rampant. The garter contains the Latin motto. 34. [Bookplate for George J. Campbell] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon bearing the arms of the ancient Scottish family Campbell, presented as a Gyronny of eight, or (gold) and sable (black). The escutcheon is bordered in gules (red) with 7 escallopes. The escutcheon contains a canton, also Gyronny of eight, gules and ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). The crest, atop a curved wreath, is an eagles head, erased. Over the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. Below the shield are two oak branches tied together by a ribbon. 35. [Bookplate for George A. Hanson] In black ink, an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a cross botony, or (gold), between four fleur-de-lis, argent (silver). The escutcheon is crested by a dexter helmet, with the beaver closed and mantling. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath with bird perched. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 36. [Bookplate for Geoffrey Christian and Michael B. Kunze] This image portrays, in black ink, on white paper, three books, one open and two lying stacked on their sides in front of the open book. In front of the three books is a large black inkwell containing a quill. The inkwell sits upon a manuscript. The manuscript has a seal on it. The image is set on a black background, with a curved top. 37. [Bookplate for Francis Henry Wilkinson] In black, red, blue, green, orange, and gold ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarter, gules, parted per fess, vair, azure and argent. Three unicorns, passant, two over one. Second quarter, gules, parted per fess, or, with three annulets, azure. Three crosses, patée fitched, or, two over one. Third quarter, gules, a spur, or. A chief, argent, partition line, or, with three cocks, erased, gules. Vizored helm of an esquire or gentleman above the escutcheon, with tasseled mantling. Above the helm is a curved crest wreath with a demi-talbot, sajant, holding in one paw a rose, stalked leaved and seeded. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 38. [Bookplate for Florence Bailey Swift] This elaborate bookplate, in black ink, consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), containing a chevron, vair of argent (silver) and azure (blue), and charged with three stags, springing (or courant) and vert (green), two over one. The escutcheon is surrounded by an elaborate bordure, and topped by a dexter closed helmet. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath and an arm embowed, habited, holding four arrows. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling, or and azure. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 39. [Bookplate for Felix Carbray] This bookplate consists of a an ornamental escutcheon, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), charged with a lion rampant, gules (red). The crest consists of a dexter helm, topped by a curved wreath and dexter cubit arm holding a sword. From either side of the crest extends elaborate mantling which flows down to the base of the shield where a banner is located, containing the Irish motto: "DIA A'S CEART." Translates to "God's Right" (as in His right to rule). 40. [Bookplate for Edward Hilton Chaloner by Rust Craft Publishers] A thin border surrounds the text ; the top of the border is in the shape of a bookshelf with curved backing. Depicted on it are several books, with one open in the middle. A candle sits in front of the open book. At the bottom left and right corners of the border are images of the globe. The bottom line of the border contains oak leaves and acorns in the centre. The creator of the bookplate is listed as Rust Craft, Boston U. S.
